August 25, 2024

It was a perfect day for a race. The day started out cool and warmed up slowly.  This is a favorite race of mine. I like the gradual downhill and running through the woods with scenic views along the way.

I had my bib mailed to me so I wouldn’t have to go through the line once I got to the shuttle bus area. I thought I had left with plenty of time to make my 7:10 wave start. But there was a long line of cars going into the parking area. Still even with a quick port-a-potty stop I still should have had time once I got on the shuttle. Little did I know I was getting on the slowest shuttle known to man. I don’t think the driver got above 20 mph even after getting on the freeway. We were even passed by the shuttle that left 10 minutes after us. I quickly hustled up the hill to the start and was able to go right away, 15 minutes behind the wave. It was just as well, since I had no allusions of winning or setting any kind of record. Still a bit annoying, though.

I set off at a moderate pace. It quickly became apparent to me that my training wasn’t all it could have been. I had done a couple of long runs of 8 – 10 miles so going the distance wasn’t an issue. My pace, though, was way off from previous years. So I just settled in for a nice pleasant run and enjoyed the scenery. I caught up to Judy and ran with her for a bit.

The finish area was festive and the beer was cold. The live band was a nice touch, too. Plenty of booths to check out and lots of refreshments to partake in. I didn’t see too many other Silver Striders, though.
