2024 GP Series Fort Steilacoom Resolution 5k

by Jerry Dietrich

1/6/24 – Steilacoom
The second race in the Silver Strider Grand Prix Series was held in Fort Steilacoom Park. The 50 plus turnout was good as runners wanted to get early points in the standings. The first Silver Striders to cross the finish line and gain 10 points were: First Male – Gary Petro in 20:14, and First Female – Jodie Bolt in 24:04.

The leaders in the perfect score race are, Edythe Hulet, Judy Fisher, Diane Martin, Jerry Dietrich, Steve Husko and Keith Lerew, with 20 points each. Be sure and check out the Grand Prix Standings by clicking on Series standings on the menu bar. Remember, there are 27 races in the series and you only need to do a minimum of 8 to be a series finisher and receive a trophy and prizes. This year 7 of the races are ParkRuns with -0- entry fee (8 if you are over 60).

I thought the weather for running was good, for this time of year. Cool, overcast and drizzly, with no wind. The course was better than ideal. It will rank among the top three we run in 2024. Flat, fast and exceptionally well marked, the course was beautiful as well. The people maintaining the park can be proud of it’s condition.

The warmth of the school cafeteria that we enjoyed in the past was missed, but those of us who went to Bur’s restaurant following the race enjoyed a very good breakfast or lunch.

Nobody missed the old course which crossed a very busy street twice and wound around the neighborhood on streets and sidewalks.

I felt apprehensive when I learned that the race would take place in Steilacoom Park. In the past, I did 6 of the old FSRC Turkey Trot races there and got lot lost 6 times. Those old courses were impossible with most of the runners getting lost and running somewhere between 2 and 4 miles. After I got lost the 6th time, I swore never to do the Turkey Race again.

This year, I had my hopes up because the Resolution Runs had a new Race Director, Darrin Hatcher, of The Tacoma City Running Club. I was more than pleased with the course. I can’t remember running on a more perfectly marked course.

It was great to see Jody Bolt return to racing after an absence. She’s still fast and we’ll see more of her in the near future. Gary Petro continues to be near the top in the TOP IO standings and we wonder if he or Jody will pursue Super Athlete status this year. Speaking of Super Athletes, our awards luncheon honoring 2023 Super Athletes is a week from Saturday (the 17th) at the Olde Spaghetti Factory in Tacoma. Anyone interested is invited to see these athletes receive their Super Athlete’s ring. The party is from noon to three in the small banquet room..

The first TOP IO rankings for 2024 are out and I will post them on February 5th.

Bruce Fisher was on the job at Steilacoom despite the wet conditions. With his camera wrapped in Saran Wrap he took some great photos. Below is his “Race Report In Photos” feature.
