The Electric Cookie Run 2025

by Karl Johnson
Green Lake – Seattle 12/6
This is a very festive run put on by Orca Running every year starting in 2019. It is a loop around Greenlake in Seattle. There are two distances, Basic Cookie (one loop, 5kish) and Extra Frosting (two loops, 10kish). They are just under the actual distances for a 5k and 10k. The 5kish loop is actually 2.82 miles. The course is very simple. It starts and stops at the same place and is just a loop around the lake. Once the sun sets there isn’t much to see except for the runners lit up like Christmas trees.
The conditions were great for an evening race in Seattle. The rain held off and the temperature was moderate. There was a bit more wind than I would have liked but it wasn’t overpowering. I was layered up a bit more than necessary and had to slow down about half way around the lake to take off my jacket. There were enough people on the course with lights that I didn’t have to turn on my head lamp until the last mile or so. I met up with Ray, Mae and Joe before the race. I hadn’t really expected to see anyone I knew so that was a pleasant surprise. The finisher’s medals were festive and light up like a Christmas tree. We also got a bag of cookies. In all, a nice start to the Holiday Season.
There were 574 runners doing the one loop option and 194 runners doing the two loops. The Basic Cookie first male Silver Strider was Michael Magnussen with a time of 17:57 and the first female Silver Strider was Maria Vaughn with a time of 23:51. The Extra Frosting first male Silver Strider was Eric Fleming with a time of 46:30 and the first female Silver Strider was Jessica Marsh with a time of 49:40.

Jerry’s Notes:
When I added this race to the schedule I never in my wildest dreams thought it would be one of the most important races of 2025. A race where goals were reached or dreams were shattered. As it turned out, winning or losing major goals were at stake in this event for some Silver Striders.
768 runners turned up on the December evening. Among those present were Michael Magnussen and Mae Elcock.
Thanksgiving found Michael with the dilemma of needing to finish all three of the remaining races to be a finisher in the year-long Ambassador Series. In addition, he needed to find and run a Half Marathon under 90 minutes before December 15th to retain his standing as a Super Athlete for 2025. Completing the Run Scared race accomplished the first needed step. The Cookie run was his second step as he led all Silver Striders in the one loop race around Green Lake. His final step will be accomplished or lost at the Santa Runs Tacoma Half Marathon on December 14th.
After the Run Scared race, Mae Elcock found herself knocked out of first place in the Ambassador Series W65-69 age division. Her point total was 79, one point shy of a perfect 80 score. Replacing her in the Number one spot was Kimmer Muenz, the second fastest 65-69 5k ranked runner in the state. Kimmer’s win at Run Scared put her at 80 points. Kimmer needed only 9 races to reach 80 points. Meanwhile Mae had been working hard needing 15 races to reach 79 points. Mae’s opening occurred at the Cookie Run. Kimmer was not entered and Mae needed to win her age group to gain the final point needed to move into first. By winning her age group at the Cookie Run, Mae achieved her goal. Mae and Kimmer were tied at 80 points each, with the tie breaker being “who ran the most races”.
Mae won with 16 races to Kimmer’s 9.
Mae’s brother, Joe, found himself in the same fix as Michael, needing the final two races to be a Series finisher for 2025. By finishing the Cookie race, Joe only needs to do a Christmas race to become a Series finisher for 2025. Likewise, Dennis Zaborac needs only to finish the Christmas Rush to be a Series finisher. Vanessa Pearson and Ladius Wolfe also need the Christmas Rush or Santa Runs Tacoma to be finishers.
Gaining honorable mention for efforts in 2025 series with 6 races are, Gretchen Ramsdell, Joleen Pereira, John Schmidt and Sheldon Thiel.
The competition for Mr. Ambassador has ended with Karl Johnson winning with 30 races.
The competition for Ms. Ambassador has ended with Judy Fisher winning with 29 races.

Running The Electric Cookie by Michael Magnussen

Mike
Yes, I did run the Electric Cookie – I literally got there 2 minutes before the gun because I couldn’t find parking and had to run a few blocks to Fleet Fleet to get my bib, but ran a decent race and came in 5th overall.
In all my years of running I’ve never done anything that last minute. It was dark out there . Next time I’ll bring a headlamp. But what a fun, festive race… And it was unseasonably warm and dry. I’ve never done it before, but will do it again.
