The Silver Strider 10k Championship

The Rhody Run 10k was designated Silver Strider Championship race for 2024. Noted for it’s challenging hills and senic surroundings the race was well attended and competitive. Only three of the 2023 Champions were able to retain their title. They were Keith Lerew M65-69, Judy Fisher W80-84 and John Phillips. These three seem to be in a class by themselves.

Before the race I was attempting to evaluate the entrants. I was disappointed that Uli Steidl the defending 10k champ wasn’t entered. I thought that Ian Fraser could have given him some competition. In the men’s 55-59 division I saw an interesting match-up. Scot Ling, the overall winner at the Renton ParkRun #258, would be facing Super Athlete Michael Magnussen. As it turned out, Scott and Michael staged “A Duel in the Hills”, Scott prevailing by 10 seconds. On the women’s side the only close race was in the W75-79, where defending Champ, Diane Martin lost her title by 22 seconds to Beatrix Dobyns.

The Rhody Run 5k

The Rhody Run 5k was well attended. It was great to see a husband and wife take the top two Silver Strider spots. Karl Johnson, our Super Athlete Chairman, won the men’s 65-69 division. Larry Larsen, making a comeback from knee surgery, won the 80-85. Roger Dean repeated his win from last year in the Men’s 85-89 age group.

The top three 5k inishers in each age group, received custom bottle openers.
