January 10, 2026 – Fort Steilacoom Park

What a beautiful morning! Am I dreaming? Where is the nasty weather? Is it really the 10th of January? Race Director, Darrin Hatcher can’t stop smiling. The turnout was good. The weather was perfect for the faster runners and good for the rest of us.

At 8:00 a.m., I was busy assisting Steve Husko in setting up the Silver Strider canopy. This was a big day for Silver Striders. It was the 2026 10k State Championship. Some of the fastest runners in Western Washington were present, ready to tame this flat, fast course.

The Championship was originally scheduled to be held at the Christmas Rush 10k in December. Heavy rains washed that race away. The resulting floods forced cancellation. The Championship was moved to the Resolution 10k in Steilacoom.

The course was a beautifully planned out 5k delight, well marked and flat. The 10k championship involved running the 5k course twice. The 5k runners stopped when they reached the finish line. The 10k runners blazed through the finish line and ran another loop.

The first Silver Striders to finish the 10k were defending 55-59 Champion Michael Magnussen and new 50-54 Champ Amanda Hoskins. We had four successful defending Champions besides Michael. They were were Keith Lerew 65-69, Steve Husko, 70-74, Rikki Bogue 60-64 and Judy Fisher 80-84.

The turnout for the 5k race was also good. Many runners who were planning to do 8 or more of the 2026 Grand Prix Series races opted for the 5k race. The first Silver Striders to finish the 5k were Chris Fisher and Jennifer Rozler.

I think some of the runners didn’t understand that Ambassadorships will be the Grand Prix series Achievement Awards in 2026. To receive an Achievement Award for 2026, you must wear a Silver Strider shirt, singlet, hat, or visor at all of the Series races you run in 2026. We have twenty 2025 Ambassador awards to be presented at the Awards Party on January 24th. I hope that we can have more ambassadors in 2026.

Because I think I was remiss in making clear the Achievement Awards for 2026, qualifying for a 2026 Achievement Award will begin at Resolution Run #2 on February 7th. I will have hats, shirts, singlets and visors available before the race.

We had a nice turnout at the Camaraderie Brunch following the race. It was great to have a chance to get together. These post-race get togethers are the equivalent of regular meetings. Plans are unveiled and sometimes discussed and friendships are renewed. Not everyone in attendance ran the race. Injuries or other reasons for not running should not deter you from enjoying a get together with friends.
