Des Moines Creek Parkrun #308

It’s been an interesting August for weather. Last week we had blistering heat for the Tacoma Narrows and the Iron Horse, this week we’re back down to the low 60’s for race time at the Des Moines Parkrun. It was a cool 60 degrees and overcast with fog covering Maury Island at the start. Ideal weather for running.

Robert Dean, the race director, gave the pre-talk and got us started. As per usual, it was congested at the beginning but quickly opened up as we all settled into our individual paces. I’ve always enjoyed this course. It is challenging for the first half as it is mostly uphill but the downhill more than makes up for it.

On a personal note, I am finally able to run mostly pain free. Just a bit of ache in the leg, but finally getting my stride and form back to what it should be. Now if I can just lose the “Freshman 15” I picked up since retiring I might return to my previous (not quite) speedy self.

There were 95 parkrunners bracing the hill today, some from across the pond in the United Kingdom. 44 of those were Silver Striders. Euan Lees was the first Silver Strider, hailing from England, with a time of 19:44. He was followed closely by Chris Fisher who registered a PB at 20:23. Sally Coates was the first female Silver Strider with a time of 30:03. 8 Silver Striders managed PBs this week, including Ken Peper who took first in the highly competitive 65-69 age group. Good job everybody!

Afterwards several of us gathered at Tuscany at Des Moines for the after-race lunch. Good times and good fellowship were had by all. Looking forward to the Pacific Runderland next week!
