I Scream!

You Scream!

We all Scream!

Oh My God! Why did I sign up for the 10k?!?!?

No? Not everyone? Just me? Oh well, at least there was ICE CREAM!

It was a beautiful day in Seward Park. The sun was shining. Mt Rainier could be seen peeking out above some clouds. It did get hot fast, though. This was my furthest run I’ve done in about the past month as I try to prepare for the Iron Horse Half in a couple weeks. I probably took a few more walking breaks than I needed to, but still finished in a respectable time, all things considered.

Lake Washington Blvd was closed to traffic for a biking event. This made it nice for the run as we could run in the street and not have to contend with a crowded sidewalk. The course was altered from what I am used to running at Seward Park. The start line was over by the festivities area and we ran in the clockwise direction around the park for a lap and then headed onto Lake Washington Blvd for an out and back before returning for another clockwise lap around the park. They eliminated the hill at what was previously the ½ mile mark so it was basically a flat course.

The medals were cute; big, pink spoons. Good size for gobbling up ice cream. First place Age Category Winners also got a medal that was an ice cream scoop (apparently left over from last year) and they also got a frame for their finish line photo. Before the start of the race there was a costume contest. And there were lots of post-race activities for the kids.

There were 79 people running the 10k, 255 running the 5k, and 19 running the 2ish mile. The nature of the event (Ice Cream!) lent itself to a younger crowd but still a decent showing for Silver Striders.

Kent Sizer, age 70, was the top Silver Strider Male Finisher for the 10k, coming in 4th overall and 3rd Male finisher. Valerie Hughes was the first Female Silver Strider for the 10k. James Frederick was the first Male Silver strider for the 5k and Mindy Leffler was the first Female Silver Strider for the 5k. For the 2 mile Walk Dani Frederick was the first Female Silver Strider and Dave Stevens was the first Male Sliver Strider.

Note: The Narrows Half which was originally scheduled for the day following Sundae Runday was changed to August 23rd.
