Hect Wins Des Moines ParkRun

November 9, 2024 – Des Moines

Silver Strider men dominated this race, taking three of the top five places overall. Led by Jason Hect, first overall human in a sizziling 19:23.4. Jason was nosed out by his dog in 19:23.3! Chris Fisher followed in fourth in 21:35 and Keith Lerew fifth in 21:40. The first Silver Strider female to finish was Dawn Gannaw in 28:12.7. She was edged by her dogs in 28:12.1

It was a good day for a race. The weather looked threatening for rain but it held out until after the race and then it was a very light sprinkle. Coolish, but to me it felt warm for this time of year.

It was a very good turnout of Silver Striders. In all there were 119 participants, nearly half of them Silver Striders. Jason Hect was the first Silver Strider to finish and the first runner to finish overall. Dawn Gannaw was the first woman Silver Strider to finish. Well done, Jason and Dawn!

Ken Peper and I have quite the competition going on. So far, I have the edge on courses with hills. We’ll have to see how that stands up on a flat course, though.

A number of us convened at Tuscany Restaurant for Breakfast/Lunch and it was delicious! It was my first time there. Good food and great conversation following the race made for a perfect day for the Silver Striders. Looking forward to the next race!

Jerry’s notes: The year is winding down and Mickey Allen, Dennis Zaborac, Nick Bailey, need to finish 4 of the following 5 races to be Series finishers for 2024.
Time Trial 3k – 11/23
Turkey Trot 5k – 11/28
Dale Hall 3k – 12/8
Christmas Rush 5k or 10k – 12/14
Renton ParkRun 5k – 12/28

I’m going to count the 11/23 time trial as a race with no points. I want to help runners who need 3 or 4 more races to be finishers. The time trial and Dale Hall 3k, will start at 10:00 am, at the southern trailhead of the Cushman Trail in Gig Harbor.

Reserve a place in the field. Trophies 5 deep (or deeper) in 5 year age groups from 50 to 94. All entrants will receive a trophy. A 12 prize drawing. Also, post-race water, bananas and Patty’s famous cookies will be offered. The cap has been lifted but the deadline is firm.
