The 3k Time Trials

Under the new Super Athlete rules for qualification, runners over 65 must have a 3k time in the TOP IO. Since there were no 3k races left on the 2024 calendar, after the Lakefair 3k Championship, time trials were being offered to give everyone a chance to qualify.

The first of three time trials was held in Gig Harbor on the Cushman Trail.  It was held on August 27th, with four runners posting 3k times in the TOP IO. The turnout at the Lakefair 3k Championship in Olympia had been light and the 4 runners at the time trials automatically made the TOP IO. The first Silver Striders were Keith Lerew for the men and Judy Fisher for the women.

The results and TOP IO rankings were:
Keith Lerew, age 66,  time 12:06 – gained #1 ranking M65-69
Brent White, Age 60,  time 17:17 – gained #4 ranking M60-64
Judy Fisher, age 81,  time 19:33 – gained #1 ranking W80-84
Jerry Dietrich, age 90,  time 37:24 – gained #1 ranking M90-94

The second time trial held on October 5th saw a bigger turnout. More runners over 65 were finding out that they needed to be in the TOP IO at 3k in order to qualify for a Super Athlete ring. At the 2nd time trial the fastest Silver Striders were Michael Magnussen for the men and Enid Moore for the women.

Ed Heckard, age 78, time 15:27 – gained #1 ranking M75-79
Bob Flynn, age 73, time 15:41 – gained #1 ranking M70-73
Dennis Zaborac, age 75, time 16:08 – gained #2 ranking M75-79
John Phillips, age 80, time 19:20 – gained #1 ranking M80-84
Judy Fisher, age 80, time 19:21 – remained #1 W80-84 (faster time)
Barbara Prine, age 72, time 19:37 – gained #1 ranking W75-79
Bob Hoekman, age 82, time 19:42 – gained #2 ranking M80-84
Diane Martin, age 76, time 23:36 – gained #3 ranking W75-79
Jahna Prine, age 80, time 45:12 – gained #3 ranking W80-84

The 3rd and final time trial will be held November 23rd on the Cushman Trail in Gig Harbor at 10:00 am. See Bulletins for directions.
