On Saturday October 14th, Betty’s Memorial 5k will be held in conjunction with the Renton ParkRun. All Silver Striders and friends of Betty’s are invited to walk or run with us.
There is no entry fee. Runners and walkers between the ages of 50 and 89 will receive memorial trophies for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in each of the five year age groups, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84 and 85-89.
This race is not part of the Dave Sherman Series, but a separate race honoring the memory of a very special woman.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was an athlete with skills in archery, cycling, golf, track, road racing, swimming and aerobic dance. She was the co-founder of the Silver Strider magazine and devoted herself to encouraging others to pursue a life of physical fitness.
For those of you who have not participated in a ParkRun before, you need to sign up by going to their website and submitting your name. Simply click on the ParkRun ad on the right side of this page and sign up. You will be given a permanent race number. The permanent number is good for all ParkRuns in the future. ParkRuns are held every Saturday worldwide and are free of charge.
Please try to participate in this event honoring a friend of all mankind.

Betty looks a little tired, but who wouldn’t be? Four gold medals at
100m, 200m, 400m and 1500m.
I told her after the 100m, “I didn’t know you could sprint that fast.”
“Neither did I,” she replied. “I picked out one of the officials at the finish
line and told myself he was a kidnapper and had my granddaughter.
When the gun went off I tore after him.”
