Saturday, March 12th, saw a beautiful morning at the 126th running of the Des Moines Creek Parkrun. The course is a lovely paved trail through the woods along the Des Moines Creek. The course gains 250 ft. in elevation in the first 2 1/2K.
As the runners climbed the hill the temperature climbed setting up the hot and fast descent for the second 2 1/2K. I was fortunate to place first, but my splits tell the story: 10:55 for the first half and 9:30 for the second.
Surprisingly, the male (65-69)Silver Strider runners dominated the race with me in 1st, Kent Sizer in 4th, Dave Sherman in 9th, and Steve Husko in 13th. Kudos to Dennis Zaborac (70-74) who snuck into 11th, proving that he is still a young man.
The Silver Striders were 66% of the 58 person field. Patty Husko (65-69) set a personal best for the course while Sandy Madden (70-74) and myself set age-group course records. Judy Fisher (75-79) placed exceptionally well in 28th, showing why she is the age-grade course record holder.
Top-Ten Age Graded performers were: 1st Denis Villeneuve, 2nd Judy Fisher, 3rd Louise Mihay (80-84), 4th Kent Sizer, 6th Dennis Zaborac, 7th Dave Sherman, 8th Sandy Madden, 9th Charlea Sherman (65-69).
If you have never run this course, I highly recommend if for the scenic beauty (that is if you can tolerate the hill). Of course, a picnic afterwards at Des Moines Beach Park (with the beautiful view!) is a nice way to celebrate a run well-done!
Jerry’s notes: For the second time in five Series races, a Silver Strider was the overall winner. Denis Villeneuve enjoyed the exhilaration of finishing first. When checking the times, the thing I found amazing was that several Striders improved their Top 10 times in spite of the first half of the course being uphill. Those accomplishing this feat were, Steve Husko, Charlea Sherman, Bob Davies, Jerry Bronson and Patty Husko.
