Jerry and Betty Dietrich’s stable of Silver Striders overwhelmed the competition in the 16th Annual Flight For Sight 5k Run.

The event was held Saturday morning, June 3rd in South Everett near Boeing’s Everett facility & Paine Field. Weather was heavy overcast with a chilly breeze but wasn’t anything runners couldn’t handle. There were 3 to 4 small rolling hills but overall the course was fairly flat and well patrolled.

The race was newly added to the 2017-18 Tab Wizard’s Grand Prix Series schedule and a bevy of Silver Striders signed up to compete. Anytime you arrive at a race and see Bruce and Judy Fisher in attendance, you know you have a “Big Run” ahead of you. Of the 79 5k entries, nearly half (37) were 50 and older.

Five of the top 10 finishers were Silver Striders. Igor Velichko, 53, easily defeated all entrants in a winning time of 19:49. Second place went to another Silver Strider, 61 year old Steve Bertrand, in a time of 22:03.

A trio of Silver Striders, also in the top 10, were: 4th Steve Husko, 63, 9th David Anderson, 62, and 10th Arne Hales, 72.

The first Female Silver Strider was Judy Fisher, age 73. Judy was the 5th female and 14th overall.

The run was primarily sponsored by the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers. Proceeds help and support Guide Dogs of America.

The race director was the Silver Striders biggest fan on Saturday. He thanked the group for participating both before and after the run. On 3 or 4 occasions during the medal presentations, he commented “Wow, the Silver Striders came to play today!”

First place Silver Strider age group medals went to: Velichko, Bertrand, Husko, Hales, Fisher, Sandy Madden, Tom Breen, Paul Bartman, Tiare Bailey, Rhonda Lawrence, Carolyn Ladd, Larry Larsen and Jerry Dietrich.

Next up on the Grand Prix Series schedule is this Sunday’s (June 11th) Bear Run 5k in Maple Valley.

Editor’s note: A 10k distance was also offered. Since both courses were certified a few Silver Striders elected to run the 10k. This Race Report’s author, Ed Heckard, ran the 10k, winning his age group and retaining the #1 spot in the TOP IO rankings for M70-74. Ed improved his time to 49:19.
