2/3/18 – Olympia

The weather forecast looked favorable for the Geoduck Gallop Half Marathon but the heavy mist while driving through Olympia was looking otherwise. Fortunately the rain subsided and the weather was about perfect.

It was a good group of runners in the Evergreen College recreation center courtyard with about 135 runners for the 10k & half marathon. The course had volunteers at main intersections with chalk arrows for directions at other areas. Some of these weren’t too visible (I’ll explain later). Water stations were strategically spaced on the course.

It is nice when a race has an extra element of competition which this one did when Kent Sizer passed me at about mile three and proceeded to stretch the lead. At mile 4 I was sorry to pass Brig Seidl walking with an injury. Hoping you get better soon. By mile 9 Kent had a good 200 meter lead and I’m beginning to think I may be in trouble. My plan was to run the last 3 miles hard but I started thinking maybe I shouldn’t wait that long. Fortunately I was able to chip away at the lead and caught up with him with about 2 miles to go.

At the end, Kent and I were discussing our mileage coming up a little short when Dave Sherman came over and stated “Did your mileage come up short? You stayed on the road when you were supposed to turn into the trail.” Oops, busted. We followed the runners in front of us. We all missed the arrow. Fortunately Dave took the trail and got everyone back on course. Pretty sure I missed that turn on both laps.
Post race recovery consisted of orange slices and water. Although the race info stated there would be 5 year age groups, they awarded 10 year age groups. To make matters worse, they did not recognize the 70+ age group.

Igor Velichko – First Silver Strider Third Overall

Donna Jackson First Female Silver Strider – 5th female Overall

Editors Note: The first Silver Strider to finish was Igor Velichko 53, in 1:29:11. The first female Silver Strider to finish was Donna Jackson 67, in 1:57:36.

The Geoduck Gallop produced two more Grand Prix Series finishers. Kent Sizer and Igor Velichko completed their eighth race with the Geoduck Half Marathon. Congratulations!
