The Better Together Virtual Run
by David M. Andersonxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx For those of us who go out in it by choice, snow in the Puget Sound area is a special treat. For me this year’s snowstorm was a chance for a challenging and fun variation on racing, since it arrived just in time for the Better Together virtual half marathon.
I already knew it was going to be a challenge on my warm-up jog to the Eastrail in Bellevue. It is up and down a couple of hills, but I’m quite used to that.
This time, blazing a nearly fresh trail took some effort, even at a slow pace. Once I reached the trail, which is quite flat, I started my race, heading north. I had to judge the pace entirely by feel, as if I were on a technical trail. The Eastrail is normally not that at all; it’s essentially a flat gravel road.
It soon became the Cross Kirkland Corridor, offered a brief view of Lake Washington and Seattle faintly through the falling snow, ran through the Google campus, and crossed some very quiet streets. Snow was packed down a bit on much of the trail by previous pedestrians, skiers, and snowshoers, but there was plenty of high-stepping and stabilizing.
By the turn-around point, I was getting tired, and by the end my legs were quite spent, so I knew that I had run an honest race.
On the jog home I was reduced to walking up every incline. How much did the snow slow me down? The week before I had run the Elwha River Bridge virtual half in 1:45:12, a good time by my standards. When I stopped my watch at the end of the Better Together run, it showed 2:16:02.

Jerry’s notes: Melanie Hingston did the Better Together 5k in snowshoes. She is the first Silver Strider to run a Derby or Grand Prix race in snowshoes. Way to go Melanie! I’ll bet she had shin splints the next day.
