6/24/18 – Gig Harbor

The colorful El Pueblito Restaurant in Gig Harbor was the setting for the Silver Strider Annual Awards Party – Part II. A decision to hold not one, but two, awards parties this year was made because the first party was postponed to Memorial Day weekend. Many had already made plans. The second awards party was held to honor those who were unable to attend.

The El Pueblito Restaurant is located across from the harbor.  It was a picture perfect day in beautiful Gig Harbor and a perfect day for a party. At 11:30 a.m., Silver Striders poured into the private room reserved for the gathering.

The turnout was larger than expected which gratified everyone. Not only did those who missed the first awards party appear, but many who attended the first party returned to honor and show their support for those who were there to receive their awards. They traveled from as far as Olympia, Port Ludlow and Seattle for this special occasion.

Because the party was so well attended, the room was a little crowded. But the old saying, “The more the merrier”, certainly applied to this group.

Silver Strider photographer, Flash Fisher, captured many smiling faces in the following photo collage:

The awards began with the presentation of a Super Athlete Ring to Huong Delabar. Huong, was one of only 16 athletes in the state of Washington who qualified for this honor. She finished in the TOP IO at all four distances (5k-10k-Half Marathon-Marathon) during 2017. In addition to the coveted ring, Huong also received a gift certificate to South Sound Running Store, sponsor of the Silver Strider TOP IO program.

Next on the agenda was the induction of Century Club members. Only 14 Silver Striders have completed 100 or more Grand Prix Series races and have been inducted into the Century Club Hall Of Fame. Those honored at the party for this achievement were: Dave Sherman, Charlea Sherman, and Tiare Bailey. A photo of each runner, personalized on a commemorative plaque was presented to each athlete.

                             Silver Strider Of The Year

As the party drew to a conclusion, everyone eagerly awaited the announcement of who would be named the Silver Strider of the Year – the highest honor in the Grand Prix Series program.

The Silver Strider of the Year for 2018 set the bar very high.  She demonstrated, through her actions, her caring spirit, inspiring all of us to reflect on what it means to be a Silver Strider. It was with great pride that we introduced the deserving recipient of this honor –  Charlea Sherman.

Last year, Charlea ran her first marathon. Running your first marathon is a very big goal!  What made Charlea’s effort exceptional, was that she ran to support a fellow Silver Strider who was also running her first marathon.

Setting aside her personal goals, Charlea ran the 26.2 mile distance with her friend, Patty Husko.

The honor of presenting the award to Charlea went to Patty. In an emotional and moving tribute to her friend, Patty shared how Charlea went above and beyond being a running partner, offering encouragement and support the entire way.

This is the true spirit of the Silver Striders!

Following the party, everyone was invited to Skansie Park, across the street, for a group photo with the waterfront in the background. It was a beautiful day!
