.7/29/17 – Silverdale

The Whale of a Run was held Saturday, July 29th in Silverdale on the new route starting near the Kitsap Mall. There were 294 runners in the race, and 29% were Silver Striders. The weather was hot and sunny.

Greg Chapman – Race Director

The race start provided a modest, downhill course along the Silverdale parade route. Many of us took advantage of that comfortable starting stretch. Then we turned right to tackle the challenging uphill climb on Newberry Hill Road.

I noticed a young man in a red shirt who ran past me, and then he started walking. As I ran up the hill, he passed me two more times and had to stop and walk each time. Some day when he is older, he may learn to pace himself. On the other hand, he may be using Galloway’s new method of running and walking. Who knows?

We finally reached the right turn onto Anderson Hill Road, and we had some shade that offered relief from the hot sun.

After a nice downhill, we turned left onto Silverdale Way and finished after a brief stretch. The old course seemed to require a very long run on Silverdale Way, and this new course is a lot more fun because the finish comes up quickly.

The first Silver Strider to finish was Mike Casad crossing with a time of 24:07.

The first female Silver Strider was Heidi Hutchinson in 28:45.

Judy Fisher set a new course record for women in the 70-79 age group with a time of 32:51.

There were awards for first through fifth place, and the plaques were very attractive with a whale design in the center.

The random prizes were very generous. Audrey Kirkwood won the gift certificate from the Yacht Club Broiler, and Charlea Sherman won the Seahawks football autographed by Richard Sherman.

After the awards ceremony, a group of Silver Striders celebrated Bruce Fisher’s 75th birthday at the Yacht Club Broiler. It was a great opportunity to thank Bruce for the wonderful contributions he makes to the Silver Striders.

Happy Birthday, Bruce

Also, I would like to thank Dennis Zaborac for the Battle of the Boomers t-shirt and the one of a kind Silver Striders Danang singlet. I appreciate the thoughtfulness, and I hope the trip to Vietnam is a huge success.
