                    Grand Prix Series Changes

by Betty Dietrich

When the 2019 Grand Prix Series schedule was announced last year, no one anticipated that a major snowstorm in February would make history and shut down the city of Olympia, as well as the entire state of Washington.  As a result, the Valentine’s Day race, a Grand Prix Series event, was canceled.  A search to find a replacement in Olympia began and two races were nominated: the Strawberry Short-K 5k and the Run Like A Dog 5k.

We are excited to announce that BOTH events have been added to the 2019 Grand Prix Series schedule.

The STRAWBERRY SHORT-K 5K will be held on Saturday, June 15th. It is part of the 84th Strawberry Festival celebration at the South Bay Grange in Olympia. Historically,  strawberry fields surrounded the South Bay Grange. “The fields are gone, but the community continues.”

The 5k course begins at the South Bay Grange and continues in a flat loop that returns by way of the Chehalis Western Trail.  Five year age divisions for runners and walkers age 50 to 85+ will be offered. First place finishers in each category will receive a complimentary strawberry shortcake. All runners and walkers will enjoy farm fresh berries at the finish line.  Additional prizes will be awarded in a drawing provided by local sponsors.

Following the race, spend the afternoon enjoying the Strawberry Festival with food, vendors, activities, and performance presentations.

                    Calling all animal lovers!

The RUN LIKE A DOG 5k will be held on Saturday, August 17th in Olympia. The course is described as a single loop on the scenic Chehalis Western Trail.  The race offers chip timing with five year age divisions for runners and walkers age 50 to 85+.

Silver Striders will receive a $5 discount on their entry fee.

This annual event is brought to you by the South Bay Veterinary Hospital and benefits the Thurston County Humane Society.  This is a fun family event where you are invited to bring your dog.  Participants with dogs will be instructed to line up behind competitive runners. Aide stations with water will be available on the course for both human and canine participants.

A pet-themed expo will follow the race.  Runners and walkers are encouraged to stay around after the race for refreshments and a chance to win one of many door prizes.

Earn Grand Prix Series points at each of these races and have fun this summer at the STRAWBERRY SHORT-K and RUN LIKE A DOG.
