8/18/17 – Federal Way

The Tab Wizard’s Grand Prix Series shifted into high gear at the Summer Trails 5k.

The turnout was light for the only evening race on the 2017-18 GPS schedule, affording those playing in the Series a golden opportunity for serious points.  Of the 57 finishers, 29 were Silver Striders, just over 50% of the field.

Taking advantage of the light turnout were Sue Wirsch, Ray Arrington, and newcomer Phil Sturholm. Sue and Ray moved into first in their age group, while Phil assumed 2nd position in his.

Ray Arrington – Leading M65-69

To be a Series finisher and share in a huge number of prizes, participants need to complete 8 Series races during the year.

Although we are only 10 races into the 28 race series, we already have 6 finishers. This could be the biggest year yet for the Grand Prix Series. See the Grand Prix Schedule.

Joining previous finishers, Judy Fisher and Nanci Larsen, were Dave Anderson, Arne Hales, Patty Husko, and Steve Husko.

One reason for the increase in GP players is the 4 race South King Challenge Series. Runners and walkers who participate in the Challenge Series will find themselves only 4 races away from being Grand Prix Series finishers as well.

The Summer Trails 5k race took place on a paved, but hilly, bike path in Federal Way. The 7:00 pm start was nice as the warm temperatures of the day began to cool.

The first Silver Strider to finish was Dave Sherman, age 63, with a time of 22:13. Dave was the 4th finisher overall.

Keith Lerew, age 59, was 22 seconds behind Dave. Noteworthy because Keith was pushing his granddaughter in a stroller over the hilly course.

The first female Silver Strider to finish was world class runner  Judy Fisher, age 73, in 25:46. Judy was 2nd woman overall.

No pre-race jitters here.
